Day 4 of Taste-Mas 2014: Great Lakes Lake Effect IPA 650 ml

The Weather Channel describes Lake Effect snow as “a mass of sufficiently cold air moving over a body of water, creating an unstable temperature profile in the atmosphere”.

Who cares?

This beer, however, has nothing to do with that drivel. It was inspired by a summer spent drinking heaps of IPAs on a stoop on Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo, NY.

Tank Ten Series: Stemming from our Project X Line, Tank Ten is a tickle trunk of tasty treats. This series is payback to our hard working brewers. We’ve reserved fermenting tank number ten for them and have given them the green light to brew whatever the heck they want. Bottoms up! 650 ml, 7.0% alc./vol.

    Hoppy.
I find this to be a typical hoppy IPA. A little more bitter than I would like, but the bitterness probably makes the 7% alcohol a bit more palatable. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. I’ll finish the bottle (of course), but I don’t think I’ll be picking this one up again.

I was actually expecting a bit more of the hoppy – piney flavour that keeps me from drinking IPAs on a regular basis.

This is just at the limit of hops that I enjoy and it has a pleasant almost fruity aftertaste as well!

I can see this being very refreshing on a hot summers day…funnily enough…

Grapefruit! Grapefruit is what I taste and I can’t help but tasting it with every sip. It is very hoppy, but it’s not a tough drink to get through. This beer would be good if we lived more north and we were shovelling snow. I can imagine shovelling a few feet of snow off my driveway and then heading inside for a few of these big boys. The colour is a nice amber colour with a nice creamy head. As far as this year’s Taste-Mas goes, this was a great spot to put this beer.

Pours a cloudy golden colour and not a signifcant amount of head.

Hoppy. Grapefruit. Pass. 2 Thumbs Down.

Guess you can tell this isnt my style. Next.

    Tasted December 20, 2014.
