Day 7 of Taste-Mas 2015: Wellington 30th Anniversary Ale 750 ml

This small-batch commemorative ale is a blend of two unique beers specially crafted to mark our 30th anniversary. We took a malt-forward ale brewed with elderberries and aged it for 3 months in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Over time this traditional English style ale develops oak and smoky vanilla notes that complement the rich malt flavours of dark fruit and raisin. We then blended this barrel-aged beer with a dry-hopped imperial golden ale infused with heather tips. This imperial golden ale contributes floral and aromatic hop flavours to create a captivating and unique beer. This beer can be enjoyed fresh or cellared for future enjoyment. 750 ml, 8.2% alc./vol.

    This is a great beer!

The alcohol is noticeable in this brew, but is not overpowering or boozy. I love the malty notes and I find the floral finish brings a great balance.

It’s a little hoppier than my normal choices but I enjoy it a lot!

Looks like Chuck and I will “Agree to Disagree”. I did not like this beer, I found it too strong, which is weird because we have had stronger ones this year. It was a nice rich dark brown with a good nose, but the taste to me was off putting. I am going to look the next time I’m in an LCBO and see if I can find another, perhaps I got a bad one.

So I am finally back in the same city as the fridge containing my Taste-Mas beers – better late than never! Let’s see how many days of tastemas I can make up for missing in one night.

I think I am more in the Huw camp than the Chuck camp on this one. I don’t love this beer. It has a nice malty taste and mouth feel, but then a bitter end and after taste. I think that part of the bitterness is coming from the alcohol content. So basically I think this one is a bit off balance for my taste.
